The 2nds opening game of the season started in almost perfect fashion.
Stalybridge’s captain, Brian Stone, won the toss and decided he’d like a bat to hopefully maximise points in the event of a win, with all the wet weather hopefully behind us (yeah right), the opening game for the 2’s of the 2017 season was uncharacteristically warm, with the sun causing a little problem for the thankfully still working scoreboard, whose usage looked in doubt before the game, when the moron who built it forgot the wifi password he’d set up to connect to it! Mea Culpa!
Opening the batting was Danny Collins and Alex Wilde, the latter soaking up the Offerton bowling attack quite nicely finishing on 31, though the young keeper for Offerton Cian Simpson took the next three wickets with a stumping and two catches, with Khalid Akram causing a bit of a stir with his dig at the officials for his dismissal with the stumping, yeah let’s not do that Khalid!
With the arrival of newly crowned “MVP” (wtf?) Pete Coxon he managed to add on the day’s top score with 38 before being dismissed, with the overs ticking down, Stalybridge managed to see out their overs with a respectable 159 for 9.
After tea, the bowling attack of James Beswick and newcomer Maurice Barber managed to keep the run rate down very well, but failed to dislodge the resilient Offerton number 1 Pickles and number 3 Kirkham, it took again the introduction of Pete ‘MVP’ Coxon to slowly dismantle the Offerton ten men, racking up great opening game figures of 7 for 21!!!
The game finished Stalybridge winning by 81 runs taking 18 points; well done lads, and the full match-card can be viewed here.
With next week being a bye, Stalybridge 2’s next match is again at home this time hosting Chapel-en-le-Frith on May 6th.
