[Week 4] Stalybridge St. Paul’s CC 2nd XI vs Old Glossop CC 2nd XI

Batters wanted, please apply Gorse Hall Road cricket ground. I’ve been trying to come up with some excuse as to why we just got so soundly beaten by Old Glossop, too windy, not used to playing on a sunny day, leaves on the line, etcetera, etcetera; but no, we got beat today because the team as a whole can’t bat, that’s easy for me to say, as someone whose never held a bat on a cricket field, sitting on the sidelines week-in, week-out, but Old Glossop had some decent batters, their opener Jamie Cannon, was only 4, or was it 6 or … Continue reading “[Week 4] Stalybridge St. Paul’s CC 2nd XI vs Old Glossop CC 2nd XI”

[Week 3] Stalybridge St. Paul’s CC 2nd XI vs Hazel Grove CC 2nd XI

2nd XI suffer 3rd consecutive defeat, this time at the hands of Hazel Grove (and some might suggest the umpire, I’ve been told, many many people, bigly mistakes they say, I don’t know if it’s true, but it’s just what I hear.™). [Week 2] Hayfield CC 2nd XI vs Stalybridge St. Paul’s CC 2nd XI

Long day in Hayfield sees a circus themed carnival, riot police, and ultimately defeat for Stalybridge’s 2nd XI. Despite the roadworks heading up to Glossop and road closures due to Hayfield Carnival, the last of the Stalybridge squad arrived at the ground with 10 minutes to spare before the match was due to start, the same can’t be said of the umpires, who completely failed to materialise. Stalybridge won the toss, and elected to bowl, and with the early removal of opener Andy Oldfield on 21, who hit 86 in week 1 against Hazel Grove,  and his replacement James Jobling … Continue reading “[Week 2] Hayfield CC 2nd XI vs Stalybridge St. Paul’s CC 2nd XI”

Tintwistle CC 2nd XI vs Stalybridge St. Paul’s CC 2nd XI – Hawke Trophy

Well, it’s two weeks later than it should have been, but finally the 2018 season was gotten underway with the seconds away at Tintwistle in the first round of the Hawke Trophy, with a couple of new faces, and a few very old ones 🙂 Brians XI lost the toss, and were put into bowl, presumably so that Tintwistle could have as much batting practice as possible with the upcoming season, it was a glorious sunny day, hopefully the first of many in the weeks to come, but the heat took its toll on the Stalybridge men, who fumbled a … Continue reading “Tintwistle CC 2nd XI vs Stalybridge St. Paul’s CC 2nd XI – Hawke Trophy”
