After last week’s 68 run defeat to Hazel Grove in the Hawke Trophy, it was always going to be a tough ask to turn that around against league leaders Dove Holes. Winning the toss, Stalybridge Captain, Brian Stone opted for the only decision of batting on another glorious afternoon in sunny Dukinfield, but openers Alex Wilde and Jordan Sherwin couldn’t make any headway against the precision bowling from Cory Flint and Kevin Waterhouse, and both were dismissed by the end of the 7th over, with just 9 runs to show for it, but that was only the start of it, … Continue reading “[Week 7] Stalybridge CC 2nd XI vs Dove Holes CC 2nd XI”
After the narrow defeat last week at the hands of Old Glossop, Stalybridge 2nds were looking to make amends at Pott Shrigley, a location set in infamy for this scorer’s son, who was run-out without facing a ball on the previous visit to this ground back at the tail end of 2019. With Brian winning the toss, he elected to bowl, and opening bowlers Madussar Bashir and Ajeet Kaintura kept the run rate to around 3 an over, and for the first 14 overs, with just the one wicket to show for it though, a big air shot by … Continue reading “[Week 2] Pott Shrigley CC 2nd XI vs Stalybridge CC 2nd XI”
A beautiful day, a new score-hut to work in and a cracking game of cricket to watch, what more can a scorer ask for? Well a win would have been nice, but no matter. The 2021 campaign’s opening fixture was against 2020’s Division 3A winners Old Glossop, in Stalybridge 2nd’s first fixture since 14th September 2019, having not competed last season, and presumably like the majority of clubs across the country haven’t had more than two weeks’ practice to get ready for the match, so it was a pleasant surprise when having lost the toss, Brian Stone’s men were put … Continue reading “[Week 1] Stalybridge CC 2nd XI vs Old Glossop CC 2nd XI”
Good day, both teams won, 1sts beat Old Glossop by 6 wickets and 2nds beat Pott Shrigley by 7 wickets with Alex Wilde (51*) carrying the bat, and Tony Mooney with 80* his highest total since beating Wilmslow Wayfarers back in 1981 when he scored 84*. (So not a career best like you thought). Then some of us went for a club curry afterwards at shirt sponsors: Sorry, too busy to write a proper one.
Compstall washout saves Stalybridge getting whitewashed. The weather once again played a pivotal role in the cricket this past weekend, and for once it worked in our favour. Before I begin, I want to wish our 2nd XI captain, Brian Stone a speedy recovery from his extensive surgery last week, get well soon Boss! With Brian out of action, Steve Monks was at the helm again, and upon winning the toss it was deemed the best decision to put the home-side into bat, on a wet uncovered track following extensive rain fall, not an unreasonable idea. I arrived about and … Continue reading “[Week 7] Compstall CC 2nd XI vs Stalybridge St. Paul’s CC 2nd XI”
Stalybridge bowling attack demolish youth heavy Buxworth. Sorry for the delay in getting this written, I can honestly say I fully expect further weekly missives to be just as equally slow in their arrival, as I’ve just realised how much work Hazel Grove’s Ian Halford put in behind the scenes collating the results online each week, across not only the (then) six adult divisions, but the numerous junior leagues also, after taking on the role of looking after just the senior divisions and cup results, at 1:30 on Sunday morning, I was still trawling through match reports, which coupled with … Continue reading “[Week 2] Buxworth CC – 2nd XI vs Stalybridge St Pauls CC – 2nd XI”
